2018 Preview
WORLD CLASS LACROSSE AT TREVOR WINGROVE TOURNAMENT
Coquitlam, BC – June 1, 2018 - Some of the best minor lacrosse players from the Lower Mainland, Vancouver Island, Interior BC, Alberta, and the United States will be participating at the 2018 Trevor Wingrove Memorial Lacrosse Tournament. There will be 26 teams playing in three divisions: PeeWee, Bantam, and Midget. The tournament runs June 7-10 in Coquitlam, BC.
Last year’s medalists (Coquitlam, Saanich, Ridge Meadows, Juan de Fuca, and USBOXLA) will face one of the strongest tournaments on record. USBOXLA is returning to the tournament for the third straight year. Last year they featured players from 16 states and won bronze in the Midget division. Other programs competing in the tournament are: Burnaby, Delta, Kamloops, Langley, Nanaimo, New Westminster, Parkland, Port Coquitlam, Richmond, Semiahmoo, and Surrey. Many of the young athletes in this tournament will be selected to Team BC teams that will play in the Canadian National Championships later this summer. Next summer, Coquitlam Minor Lacrosse will also host the 2019 Box Lacrosse Nationals for these same divisions. The tournament is regarded as a warm up for the BC Provincial Championship in July.
The 34-year old tournament, hosted by Coquitlam Minor Lacrosse, is considered to be among the best in the country and features only top A1 calibre teams. It was named after former lacrosse star Trevor Wingrove in 2011. He played his entire lacrosse career in Coquitlam and was also a senior manager for the City of Coquitlam. His uniform was retired by the Coquitlam Junior Adanacs, a street through Coquitlam Town Centre Park was renamed in his honour, and a bursary was set up to honour him. The Trevor Wingrove Bursary is administered by the Coquitlam Foundation and is awarded annually to a player in the Coquitlam Minor Lacrosse Association who demonstrates the qualities portrayed by Trevor. This year’s bursary will be awarded to Morgan Lowe and Gabriel Procyk at the Coquitlam Foundation’s Awards Night on June 13th.
The tournament is run by an amazing group of volunteers and has a number of sponsors. Most Valuable Player awards are given to each team in all 54 games played. Winners will receive two tickets each to a Vancouver Stealth game at the Langley Events Centre. The Stealth play in the professional National Lacrosse League. Powell Lacrosse sponsors the Trevor Wingrove Most Inspirational Player Awards. Lacrosse sticks are given to a player in each division for quality of play, sportsmanship, and inspirational play to teammates. National Lacrosse League stars will be present to hand out awards after each of the championship games. Thanks to all of our sponsors: Tourney Machine/SI Play, Giant Lacrosse, Cali-Lax, Beyond the Grape, Coquitlam Adanacs, Canuel Caterers, Cyclone Taylor Sports, Action Pro Photography, XTreme Sports, Fern Web Design & Victory Trophies.
This year’s tournament will go on with a heavy heart. This April, Trevor’s father, Les Wingrove, passed away at the age of 74. Les was a fixture at the Trevor Wingrove Memorial Tournament and watched most of the games. You could find him visiting with former players who are now parents and coaches of participating players. There will be a special commemorative t-shirt to honour Trevor and Les available for purchase and all funds will go to the Trevor Wingrove Bursary Fund. To learn more about Les Wingrove’s legacy please visit http://www.leswingrove.com. Please visit the tournament web site at http://www.trevorwingrove.com for a complete listing of schedule and scores. A real-time schedule and scoring system is provided by Tourney Machine/SI Play. Admission to the tournament is free and all games are played at the Poirier Sport and Leisure Center at 633 Poirier Street in Coquitlam. The gold medal games will be played on Sunday June 10. PeeWee and Bantam gold medal games are at 12:00pm and Midget is at 2pm. Please refer to the online schedule for all times, locations, and changes.
