2017 Preview


Three American teams from USBOXLA will join the top minor lacrosse teams from across British Columbia and Alberta in Coquitlam from June 8 - 11 for the Trevor Wingrove Memorial Tournament. It is Western Canada's premier minor lacrosse tournament hosted by the Coquitlam Minor Lacrosse Association. Twenty-eight teams from the United States, Lower Mainland, Vancouver Island, Okanagan, Interior, and Alberta will compete in the four day event starting on Thursday with championship games on Sunday. The teams compete in the Peewee Division (ages 11 and 12), the Bantam Division (ages 13 and 14) and in the Midget Division (ages 15 and 16). Championship final games go Sunday at 1:30 pm for Peewee, 3:00 pm for Bantam and 4:30 pm for Midget.

Last summer Team USBOXLA became the first US-based club to compete at this prestigious event. They enjoyed the event so much that this year they are arriving early to prepare for this year`s tournament. Most Valuable Player awards will go to a member of each team in all 54 games played. Winners will receive two tickets each to a Vancouver Stealth game in the professional National Lacrosse Association played at the Langley Events Centre as well as ear buds.. Stealth players will also present awards after each of the championship games. Powell Lacrosse sponsors the Trevor Wingrove Most Inspirational Player Awards. Lacrosse sticks are given to a player in each division for quality of play, sportsmanship, and inspirational play to teammates.

The Coquitlam Minor Lacrosse Association has hosted this event for thirty-three years. It was formerly the Dogwood Tournament but was re-named the Trevor Wingrove Memorial Tournament in 2011. Wingrove was a former lacrosse star who played his entire career in a Coquitlam jersey and was a Senior Manager for the City of Coquitlam. He lost a courageous battle with cancer in 2010. Amongst the honours besides this tournament include his #23 uniform number being retired by the Coquitlam Jr Adanacs, a street through Coquitlam Town Centre Park renamed "Trevor Wingrove Way" by the City of Coquitlam, and the Trevor Wingrove Bursary administered by the Coquitlam Foundation. The bursary is awarded annually to a player that played in the Coquitlam Minor Lacrosse Association who demonstrates the qualities Trevor portrayed. This year The Trevor Wingrove Bursary will be awarded to at the Coquitlam Foundation's Awards Night on June 6th.

Many of the young athletes in this tournament will be selected to Team BC teams that will represent BC in the Canadian National Championships later in the year. The tournament is regarded as a warm up for the top teams competing in Provincial Championships in July as the top invitational tournament for A1 calibre players in the province. All the top teams in British Columbia and elsewhere are invited to the tournament.
